Top Seeds Swiatek and Jabeur Ousted in Wimbledon’s Third Round Upsets

LONDON — In a surprising turn of events at Wimbledon, world No. 1 Iga Swiatek and two-time tournament finalist Ons Jabeur were both eliminated in the third round of the competition on Saturday.

According to Philippines News Agency, Iga Swiatek, the current French Open champion from Poland, was defeated by Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva in a match that ended 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Putintseva expressed her thrill and shock over the victory, crediting her intense focus and aggressive play for overcoming the top seed. “It feels really great. I don’t know how I did it. I was focused on playing fast and not giving her any time and it worked,” said Putintseva, who is set to face Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth round.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina took down Ons Jabeur of Tunisia, the world No. 10, in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6(4). Svitolina spoke highly of her opponent, acknowledging the difficulty in facing a player of Jabeur’s caliber, especially on grass. “It’s not easy to play such a champion as Ons is. She had a great two finals here. Always very tricky to play her on the grass,” Svitolina remarked. She emphasized the importance of focusing on each point, which she believes was crucial in her victory.

Svitolina is scheduled to play China’s Xinyu Wang in the next round, continuing her campaign at this year’s Wimbledon.
