Taguig Lawmaker Calls for Accountability in Alleged China ‘Gentlemen’s Agreement’

Taguig City, Philippines - During a House of Representatives probe on Monday, Taguig City 2nd District Representative Amparo Maria Zamora stated that former government officials should face imprisonment if found responsible for an alleged secret agreement with China concerning Ayungin Shoal.

According to Philippines News Agency, any former officials proven to be behind the so-called 'gentlemen's agreement' aimed at maintaining the status quo in the disputed waters should be held accountable and incarcerated. This statement was made at a press conference following the initial session of the inquiry. The current probe seeks to uncover the facts surrounding the alleged agreement, which reportedly occurred during the Duterte administration but has been denied by current officials from the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Defense.

The investigation has also faced challenges due to the absence of several former officials who were invited to testify, leading to frustration among lawmakers. Zambales 1st District Representative Jefferson Khonghun, the author of the resolution initiating the probe, emphasized the impact of these allegations on President Ferdinand R. Bongbong Marcos Jr.'s administration and the necessity for those summoned to participate in the hearings. He highlighted the committee’s oversight function and its determination to compel attendance legally if necessary.
