Sultan of Brunei Affirms Commitment to Climate Change at COP 28 Opening Session
Bandar Seri Begawan – His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam expressed a strong commitment to addressing climate change during the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP 28) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Sultan made these remarks at the Opening Session of the World Climate Action Summit held at Expo City, Dubai. Accompanied by His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen, His Majesty first attended the summit’s opening session.
According to Radio Television Brunei, upon arrival at the Al Wasl Dome, His Majesty was welcomed by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, and His Excellency António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Following a group photograph session with other Heads of State and Government, His Majesty joined the Opening Session of the World Climate Action Summit in Al Waha Theatre. He then proceeded to Plenary Al-Hairat to attend the first part of the High-Level Segment for Heads of States and Government of COP 28. During his speech, the Sultan urged developed countries to fulfill their past commitments in addressing the impacts of climate change.
The opening session also featured remarks from His Excellency Doctor Sultan Ahmed Al-Jaber, President of COP 28, UAE Special Envoy for Climate Change and Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology; His Excellency Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of the Republic of India; His Excellency Dennis Francis, President of the United Nations General Assembly; and His Excellency António Guterres, UN Secretary-General.
