Samar Enhances Tandaya Trail, Introduces New Tourist Attractions

SAMAR – The Tandaya Trail in Samar province is set for an expansion, incorporating several new sites to attract more tourists, including a river cruise and mangrove tour in Calbiga.

According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke at a press briefing on Friday, the newly added Barobaybay River Cruise and Mangrove Tour in Barobaybay village will start in September. Operated by the Barobaybay Mangrove and Marine Conservationist Association, this new offering is set within a sprawling 216 hectares of mangrove and nipa along the Calbiga River, extending to Maqueda Bay, and will provide visitors a glimpse into the local fishing practices.

Since its introduction in 2015, the Tandaya Trail has featured notable sites like the Sohoton Cave in Basey, rock formations in Marabut town, and the Ulot River in Paranas town. The expansion now includes Lulugayan Falls, Calbiga Cave, Lobo Cave, the Golden River cruise, and culinary offerings near the San Juanico Bridge in Sta. Rita town.

Additionally, Piczon highlighted the province's initiative to market itself as a culinary destination through the "Secret Kitchens of Samar." This gastronomy tour offers cooking demonstrations, interactions with local chefs, and a chance to enjoy the authentic flavors of Samar's heritage recipes.

The expansion of the Tandaya Trail coincides with the 183rd founding anniversary of Samar province, marked by various activities scheduled from August 1 to 12. The term "Tandaya," the ancient name of the province, is utilized in these efforts to boost local tourism. Samar Day, previously celebrated on November 10, now commemorates the historical establishment of Samar as a separate province by a royal decree signed by Queen Isabel of Spain on August 11, a significant date in the province's history.
