PARIS—Elina Avanesyan, ranked 70th worldwide, delivered a stunning upset against world No. 8 Qinwen Zheng in the women’s third round of the 2024 Roland Garros on Saturday. Avanesyan overcame a challenging match to defeat Zheng with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (10-6).

According to Philippines News Agency, the 21-year-old from Russia will face Italian Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round. In the men’s competition, world No. 4 Alexander Zverev narrowly escaped elimination, prevailing in a grueling five-set match against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. The final scores were 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (10-3). Zverev, after the match, praised his opponent’s skill and resilience, acknowledging the narrow margin of his victory. Zverev is set to face Danish player Holger Rune in the upcoming round.
