Philippine National Police Intensifies Crackdown on Cigarette Smuggling

MANILA — In response to significant revenue losses from the illicit cigarette trade, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has committed to intensifying its efforts to curb cigarette smuggling across the country. The crackdown follows a report indicating that the government lost PHP 25.5 billion in 2023 due to this illegal activity.

According to Philippines News Agency, the fight against the smuggling and counterfeiting of cigarettes is pivotal not only for law enforcement but also for public health and economic stability. In a recent statement, he emphasized the comprehensive nature of the planned operations, which include dismantling illicit operations, seizing counterfeit products, and prosecuting violators. The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) noted a 15.9 percent decline in revenue last year, directly linked to the proliferation of counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes, with losses already totaling PHP 6.6 billion in the first four months of this year alone.

Gen. Marbil has directed police units to enhance their efforts, which will involve increased surveillance, stricter border controls, and coordinated operations with other law enforcement agencies to address this pressing issue effectively.
