Philippine Coast Guard Files Charges Against Personnel Over Extortion Attempt


Zamboanga City – The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has taken legal action against one of its members following an alleged extortion incident involving a job applicant.



According to Philippines News Agency, criminal and administrative cases were initiated against Petty Officer Third Class Ibrahim Banota, who is accused of demanding PHP 150,000 from a prospective recruit in exchange for ensuring their acceptance into the service. This incident emerged during the PCG’s nationwide recruitment for the 2024 calendar year, as stated in a press release on Friday. Banota, stationed at the PCG Station Western Tawi-Tawi in Zamboanga City, was apprehended during an entrapment operation conducted five days after the extortion attempt was first reported on May 19. He now faces estafa charges and an administrative case. The PCG has called on the public to report any illicit activities linked to its recruitment processes.
