MMDA to Establish 14 Motorcycle Lay-bys in Metro Manila for Rainy Season

Quezon City - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has announced plans to set up 14 motorcycle lay-bys under flyovers across the National Capital Region to aid motorcyclists during rain or emergencies.

According to Philippines News Agency, who inspected a motorcycle lay-by under the Quezon Avenue flyover, these lay-bys are designed to provide relief to riders during heavy rainfall and reduce vehicular congestion on major roads. Currently, motorcyclists often stop under bridges and other overhead structures to seek shelter, causing traffic delays and posing safety risks. The new lay-bys will be located along major thoroughfares such as Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA), C5, and Commonwealth Avenue, and are expected to be operational by July. Additionally, the motorcycle taxi company Angkas has committed to donating 10 bicycle repair shops, equipped with basic repair tools, to these sites. Artes highlighted that trained MMDA personnel would be on hand to offer roadside assistance to motorcyclists and cyclists. The initiative comes after the MMDA began imposing fines last July on motorcycles that stop in the middle of roads during rainstorms.
