Massive Evacuations in Southwest China as Rains Trigger Flash Floods
SICHUAN, CHINA — Over 80,000 residents have been evacuated in southwest China due to severe rainstorms and resulting flash floods that have impacted multiple cities and prefectures across Sichuan province, state authorities reported.
According to Philippines News Agency, the intense rainfall began last Friday and has since caused significant flooding and destruction of property across the region. Sichuan’s emergency management authorities have been actively responding to the crisis, though no casualties have been reported from the recent rains. To mitigate further risks, local officials have intensified spot checks, patrols, and monitoring efforts to prevent secondary disasters such as landslides and additional flooding.
The region is still reeling from a recent disaster on August 3, where flash floods and a mudslide in the city of Kangding resulted in 27 people being reported dead or missing. The continuous heavy rainfall has exacerbated the challenges for emergency response teams working in the area.
