Manila Set to Host Vibrant Three-Day Independence Day Celebrations

MANILA — The Philippines is gearing up for a festive three-day celebration of its 126th Independence Day, set to take place from June 10 to 12 at Rizal Park Burnham Green on Roxas Boulevard, directly opposite the Quirino Grandstand.

According to Philippines News Agency, the event will feature a wide array of activities organized by various government and non-governmental organizations. Highlights include competitions hosted by the Pilipinas Obstacle Sport Federation, offering a ‘ninja warrior’ experience for participants of all ages. The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, together with the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Agriculture, will run the Kusina (Kitchen) Warrior competition, featuring student-cooks vying to create the best adobo and pancit dishes.

The celebration will also see a labuyo (wild chili)-eating contest organized by the Chili Federation, alongside displays of plants and products. Notable performances include a concert by National Artist for Dance Alice Reyes on June 10, and live music from bands like Rocksteady, The Juans, Plethora, and Bini over the course of the festival. Additionally, historical films such as “Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo,” “Heneral Luna,” and “Goyo: Ang Batang Heneral” will be shown on the evenings of June 11 and 12.

The event will also offer a wide range of services under the Pampahalaang Program at Servisyo, including medical services, fresh produce sales, passport appointment bookings, National Bureau of Investigation clearances, and more, with activities scheduled for June 11 and 12. The culmination of the Independence Day celebrations will be the Parada ng Kalayaan (Freedom Day Parade) on June 12, featuring 22 floats from various provinces and government agencies, each highlighting significant events in the country’s struggle for freedom. The parade will be hosted by Paolo Bediones and Isabelle Daza.

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) has encouraged public participation, advising everyone to follow their social media pages and use the hashtag #Kalayaan2024 for updates.
