Linda Noskova Upsets World No. 1 Iga Swiatek in Australian Open
ANKARA: In a stunning upset at the 2024 Australian Open, 19-year-old Linda Noskova eliminated women’s singles World No. 1 Iga Swiatek on Saturday, ending her 18-match winning streak with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
According to Philippines News Agency, the young Czech player expressed her disbelief and satisfaction with the outcome. “I’m speechless. I knew it was going to be an amazing match with the world no. 1,” she said, adding, “I’m just really glad to get through this round.” On the other hand, Swiatek reflected on her performance, noting, “I felt like I had everything under control until she broke me in the second set. I had a couple of chances to break her in the second set and I didn’t use them.”
Noskova’s next challenge in the tournament will be against Ukrainian player Elina Svitolina in round 4.
In the men’s singles competition, World No. 3 Daniil Medvedev also advanced to the fourth round after defeating Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Russian player secured his victory with straight sets of 6-3, 6-4, 6-3. Medvedev is set to face Portuguese Nuno Borges in the upcoming round.
