Kanlaon eruption possible; logs 45 volcanic quakes

Manila: The Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolcs) has recorded an increase in unrest in Mt. Kanlaon for the past 24 hours.

At a Bagong Pilipinas interview on Friday, Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol said Kanlaon Volcano recorded 45 volcanic earthquakes.

He said phreatic eruption is possible, reminding the public that alert level 2 remains hoisted and that entry into the 4-kilometer radius permanent danger zone is still not allowed.

‘Early this week bumaba ang mga naitala nating paglindol from as high as 337 earthquakes last September 11 na naging five na lamang natin for the past two days. Pero for the past 24 hours, tumaas na naman, naging 45 (the number of recorded earthquakes decreased from as high as 337 earthquakes last September 11 to only five for the past two days. But for the past 24 hours, it has increased to 45) for the sulfur dioxide flux,’ Bacolcol said.

On Sept. 19, Phivolcs recorded 8932 tonnes of sulfur dioxide flux, and a moderate emission of a plume at 150 meters tall, drift
ing northeast and east.

An inflated volcano edifice was also observed.

Residents near the volcano are also reminded to wear face masks to protect themselves from volcanic ash and gases.

In case of sulfur odor, Bacolcol advised the public to drink plenty of water to dissolve the sulfur and to wash their eyes with water in case of eye irritation.

Those who experience more severe conditions are advised to see a doctor.
