Ilocos Norte Electric Coop Intensifies Actions Against Delinquent Consumers

LAOAG: The Ilocos Norte Electric Cooperative (INEC) has initiated stricter measures against delinquent consumers, including the issuance of approximately a hundred demand letters to erring clients. The move, announced by acting general manager Cipriano Martinez during a press conference at the INEC main branch in Dingras town on Wednesday, aims to address the significant unpaid bills affecting the cooperative’s financial stability.

According to Philippines News Agency, INEC has been facing an alarming situation with around PHP28 million in unpaid bills each month. This financial strain is undermining the cooperative’s ability to deliver enhanced services to its consumers. Among the entities issued a demand letter is the Laoag City General Hospital (LCGH), which owes about PHP5 million, including arrears.

Martinez highlighted a recent compromise reached with the City Government of Laoag. The hospital has made an initial payment of PHP1 million. “We have agreed with Mayor Michael M. Keon, as he played a crucial role in facilitating this agreement with the LCGH management,” Martinez stated.

The cooperative’s decision to enforce stricter measures follows a period during the pandemic when it implemented a ‘no disconnection policy’ for displaced workers or low-income households unable to pay their electricity bills. This leniency was also extended to other establishments, especially those providing public services.
