Filipina Caregiver Celebrated by Israeli President for Bravery During Hamas Attack

TEL AVIV — Camille Jesalva, a Filipina caregiver, was honored by Israeli President Isaac Herzog for her heroic actions during the Hamas offensive against Israel on October 7, protecting her elderly ward amid extreme danger.

According to Philippines News Agency, Jesalva was recognized on July 16 during an event for contributors to the bestselling book One Day in October, which recounts inspiring acts from the attack. The embassy praised Jesalva's bravery and the deep bond between Filipinos and Israelis, highlighted by her actions during the crisis. Jesalva was caring for 95-year-old Nitza Hefer in Kibbutz Nirim when the attack occurred. She negotiated with militants who invaded their home, offering her savings and mobile phone to ensure their safety.

Her quick thinking allowed her and Hefer to hide in a safe room until Israel Defense Forces rescued them. Jesalva's story, which captured widespread media attention, underscores her valor and quick thinking, which President Herzog personally lauded during their meeting.
