DOLE Launches Investigation into Deadly Zamboanga Firecracker Depot Explosion

ZAMBOANGA CITY — Following a deadly explosion at a pyrotechnics warehouse in Zamboanga City that resulted in five fatalities, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has initiated a probe into potential violations of occupational safety and health standards.

According to Philippines News Agency, the DOLE-Zamboanga Peninsula office has been directed to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, which also injured 38 individuals and caused significant property damage. Speaking in a phone interview on Sunday, Laguesma emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances leading to the blast and ensuring such incidents do not recur. “I have given instruction to our DOLE regional director to immediately look into the incident and undertake an occupational health and safety investigation,” he stated.

The operations at the firecracker warehouse, located in Barangay Tetuan, have been temporarily suspended during the investigation. Laguesma noted that the suspension would remain in effect until appropriate safety measures are established. He assured that the safety of the workers is a priority and that operations would only resume once it is safe to do so.

Additionally, Laguesma promised that the department would provide necessary assistance to the workers affected by the blast. “If workers are displaced, temporary emergency employment can be provided,” he added, outlining the support mechanisms in place for those impacted by the explosion.
