DOJ Pledges Comprehensive Investigation into Bataan Oil Spills
BATAAN — The Department of Justice (DOJ) has committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the recent oil spills in Bataan, with the aim of holding all responsible parties accountable.
According to Philippines News Agency, the spills occurred following the capsizing of three sea vessels, which led to the discharge of thousands of liters of oil into local waters. The pollution has spread to nearby provinces, including Cavite and Marinduque. The DOJ has expressed its intention to pursue not only the owners and crew of the sunken MT Terra Nova and the two other vessels involved but also the authorities who certified these ships as seaworthy despite clear warning signs.
Assistant Secretary Jose Dominic F. Clavano IV elaborated on the investigation’s objectives, indicating that the DOJ is probing potential mistakes and a possible “conspiracy” in the licensing process. The department is also collaborating with local government units to provide compensation to the fisherfolks and residents impacted by the spills. Initial steps have included dialogue between the DOJ, Cavite provincial government, vessel owners, and insurance representatives.
Justice Secretary Jesus Remulla underscored the broader implications of the investigation, stating, “Upholding the Rule of Law encompasses not only the administration of justice among individuals but also the protection and preservation of our environment and natural resources for future generations.” He warned that any violation of environmental integrity would be met with severe legal consequences.
