Dengue Incidents Surge in Central Visayas Despite Dry Conditions

CENTRAL VISAYAS — The Department of Health (DOH) reported a significant rise in dengue cases in Central Visayas during the first half of 2024, with nearly 7,000 cases recorded despite ongoing dry weather conditions.

According to Philippines News Agency, medical officer at DOH 7’s Communicable Diseases Section, the region saw 6,968 dengue cases with 18 fatalities from January to June. This marks a 95 percent increase compared to the same timeframe in the previous year. Dr. Buscato noted that the spike occurred during a period of unusually dry weather, which typically reduces mosquito breeding. He attributed the unusual increase in cases to the local practice of storing water during dry spells, providing mosquitoes with ample breeding sites.

Dr. Buscato explained that warmer temperatures accelerate mosquito metabolism, potentially increasing the risk of dengue transmission. Central Visayas is currently ranked fourth among regions in the country for high dengue case counts. Although specific provincial data was not disclosed, Dr. Buscato mentioned that rural areas recorded the majority of the cases, highlighting a shift from previous years where urban centers like Cebu City, Lapu-Lapu, and Mandaue topped the list.

The health official emphasized the importance of the 4S strategy to combat dengue: searching and destroying breeding sites, using self-protection measures such as long sleeves and insect repellents, seeking early consultation for persistent fever, and supporting targeted fogging or spraying in areas with rising dengue cases. He urged community cooperation with government-led anti-dengue initiatives to curb the spread of the disease.
