Cordillera LGUs Excel in Governance, DILG Reports Increasing SGLG Passers

BAGUIO CITY — The Department of the Interior and Local Government in the Cordillera Administrative Region (DILG-CAR) has reported a significant increase in the number of local government units (LGUs) excelling in governance standards. This year, the number of LGUs potentially passing the Seal of Good Local Governance (SGLG) criteria has risen to 40, a notable increase from previous years.

According to Philippines News Agency, the upward trend in SGLG passers from 12 in 2019, to 13 in 2022, and 23 in 2023 reflects a broader commitment to excellence in local governance among the Cordillera's 83 LGUs. The SGLG is a mandatory performance evaluation assessing various competencies crucial for effective local governance.

The assessment encompasses 10 critical areas: financial administration and sustainability, disaster preparedness, social protection, health compliance, education, business competitiveness, safety and order, environmental management, tourism and cultural development, and youth development. San Jose emphasized that achieving the SGLG rating signifies not only recognition but also an assurance of excellent service delivery to constituents.

The DILG continues to support LGUs that did not pass the evaluation by offering technical assistance, particularly in areas where they score lower. Cordillera LGUs generally perform well in health, safety, tourism, disaster readiness, and environmental management, but face challenges in education, youth development, business environment, social protection, and financial management.

Furthermore, San Jose highlighted the importance of having a comprehensive land use plan for LGUs, noting that failure to have an adequate plan results in automatic disqualification from the SGLG.
