Calamba Provides Financial Support to Tricycle Operators Impacted by Pandemic

Calamba, Philippines — The Calamba city government initiated a financial aid disbursement on Monday, distributing funds totaling PHP20 million to 10,000 beneficiaries within the tricycle sector. The "Tulong Gulong" project is designed to support tricycle drivers and operators still grappling with the economic effects of the pandemic.

According to Philippines News Agency, who spoke at the LCC Auditorium in Barangay 5, this marks the first instance the city has allocated such a significant budget specifically for the tricycle sector. "The members of the Tricycle Operators and Drivers Association (TODA) were significantly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, and recovery has been challenging," Mayor Rizal stated during the event.

The mayor further clarified that the financial aid being provided is funded by the local government and is separate from national programs like the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) and Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS).

Eligibility for this assistance is restricted to tricycle operators holding valid franchises. The city's Business Permit and Tricycle Franchising Office (BPTFO) confirmed that as of March 31, 2024, there are 10,000 active franchise holders in Calamba.

In addition to financial support, Mayor Rizal announced the Kabuhayaan ni Rizal program, which offers skills and livelihood training for tricycle drivers and their families. This initiative aims to provide startup cash assistance following the completion of training. Over 2,000 individuals have already enrolled in these programs and received startup assistance.
