Cagayan de Oro to Host ‘Fireworks Olympics’ and Sports Exhibitions for Year-End Festivities

Cagayan de Oro – As the year draws to a close, the city of Cagayan de Oro is gearing up for a series of festive events, including an innovative “Fireworks Olympics” and high-profile volleyball exhibition games, revealed a local official on Monday.

According to Philippines News Agency, the Fireworks Olympics is part of the Christmas celebration sponsored by the mayor’s office. The event, which is free and open to the public, is intended to add excitement to the city’s Christmas festivities. “We want to bring some Christmas cheer to our constituents as they celebrate,” stated Mayor Uy while discussing the initiative.

While complete details of the Fireworks Olympics are still pending, the mayor has extended an invitation to interested participants from both within and outside the city to join the competition. Further announcements are anticipated as the event approaches.

Additionally, Mayor Uy’s office will organize a volleyball exhibition featuring top teams from the Philippine Volleyball League (PVL). These matches, which will occur before Christmas Day, will showcase four leading women’s teams, including Creamline and PLDT. These games are set to take place at the Aquilino Pimentel Jr. International Convention Center, a venue that previously attracted significant attention during the city’s annual fiesta in August due to the presence of these popular PVL teams.

Looking ahead to next year, Mayor Uy disclosed plans to host a Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) regular season match featuring the well-known Ginebra team and another PBA contender. This basketball match is also planned to be held at the Aquilino Pimentel Jr. International Convention Center.

Mayor Uy emphasized that these events are part of a broader tourism campaign, signaling the city’s ambition to become a major host for significant events in the future.
