Brunei Addresses Rising Concerns Over E-Waste Impact on Environment
Bandar Seri Begawan – The surge in technological innovation and the production of electronic gadgets has led to a significant increase in electronic waste (e-waste), a pressing environmental issue. In 2019, over 50 million metric tonnes of e-waste were produced globally, with Brunei Darussalam accounting for 20 metric tonnes.
According to Radio Television Brunei, Awang Muhd.Fakhrurazi bin Haji Salleh, an Environment Officer, highlighted that since 2019, the Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation has established e-waste depots in Sungai Paku Engineered Landfill, Tutong District, and Sungai Akar Transfer Station. Unlike regular waste, e-waste in Brunei Darussalam is classified as hazardous due to its flammable and poisonous characteristics. The improper handling of e-waste poses risks to life, health, and the environment.
