BI Halts Trafficking Attempt at Manila Airport

MANILA — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) successfully intercepted a human trafficking operation at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, preventing a woman from being transported to Malaysia for exploitation in the sex trade. The incident, which occurred on March 22, involved a female victim and an alleged accomplice who presented themselves as a couple on vacation.

According to Philippines News Agency, the male suspect’s recent travel history raised suspicions among immigration officials. A review of his previous trips revealed a pattern, where he had traveled with a different woman, also claimed as his partner, who had not returned to the Philippines. BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco described this as indicative of a “bitbit” scheme, a tactic where traffickers ferry victims under the guise of tourism to exploit them overseas.

The detained woman was provided support through the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, while her recruiter now faces legal repercussions under the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act. The BI’s announcement also referenced a distressing 2023 case, where a victim was smuggled into Malaysia via Palawan and subjected to severe abuse, including forced abortion, highlighting the severe risks associated with such trafficking operations.

Commissioner Tansingco emphasized the critical need for vigilance and education to prevent further instances of trafficking, particularly urging women to be cautious of deceptive employment offers abroad. The bureau’s intervention underscores ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and protect vulnerable individuals from such exploitative schemes.
