Batangas-The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced stringent ‘rules of engagement’ for the impending rollout of a government-controlled African swine fever (ASF) vaccination program in Batangas, set to begin with an initial 10,000 doses of emergency procured ASF AVAC live vaccines expected on August 16. This announcement comes as part of a broader effort to combat ASF outbreaks that have significantly impacted local swine populations.

According to Philippines News agency, the department will clarify these guidelines with local government officials and stakeholders in the hog industry this Friday. The guidelines stipulate that hog to be vaccinated must not have been previously infected or show any symptoms of ASF. Additional protocols include only administering the vaccine to grower-stage hogs, specifically those aged between four and 22 weeks, and explicitly excluding breeders and breeding sows from vaccination. Palabrica emphasized the need for farmer agreement on these conditions before vaccinations can proceed, including a commitment to regular monitoring and reporting on vaccine efficacy and hog health.
