Australian Ambassador Outlines Investment Opportunities in Cordillera

Baguio City, Philippines – The Australian ambassador to the Philippines identified five key sectors for potential Australian investment in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) during a press conference on Friday. Speaking at an event marking the 78th Philippine-Australia Friendship Day, Ambassador Hae Kyong Yu emphasized the region’s potential in mining, green energy, food and agriculture, education, and digital economy.

According to Philippines News Agency, these sectors align with the Southeast Asia Economic Strategy, where the Philippines is considered a crucial partner for Australia. She noted that CAR’s rich natural resources make it an attractive destination for investors, particularly in areas where Australia already has established expertise, such as mining and renewable energy. “There is no reason why this region cannot attract investors from Australia in those areas,” Yu stated, highlighting the opportunities for sustainable and inclusive growth in the mining sector.

The ambassador also discussed the potential for expanding renewable energy use in Baguio, pointing out the current low percentage of energy derived from renewable sources in the city. “Australia and Australian companies have a great know-how and we are ready to provide much-needed investments to turn things around,” she said, emphasizing the urgency of increasing renewable energy adoption to address global environmental challenges.

Additionally, Ambassador Yu expressed admiration for the traditional hand and loom-woven fabrics of the Cordillera, suggesting them as potential exports to Australia. She mentioned her personal appreciation for the textiles, noting that she would be wearing one to a reception later that evening.
