Altas beat Pirates in OT to boost NCAA semis bid
Manila: University of Perpetual Help defeated Lyceum of the Philippines University, 89-83, in overtime Saturday to boost its semifinal bid in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Season 100 men’s basketball tournament at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City.
Perpetual posted its biggest lead at 59-51 in the third quarter and was ahead 77-75 when Lyceum’s Jonathan Daileg scored from the left corner with over a second remaining in regulation.
What was initially thought as a triple was ruled a two-pointer as Daileg was seen stepping on the arc during video replay, forcing the extra period.
Christian Pagaran, Jearico Nuñez, and Mark Gojo Cruz combined for 12 points for Perpetual in the extra period.
Pagaran finished with 16 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists, and two blocks; Nuñez had 15 points, seven rebounds, and two assists; and Cruz chipped in nine points, seven rebounds, five assists, one assist, and one block.
The Altas improved to 6-8 and avenged their 62-64 loss to the
Pirates during the first round on Oct. 2.
JP Boral topscored with 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while John Abis contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists for the Altas.
Renz Villegas had 23 points, four assists, and two steals for the Pirates, who slid half a game behind at 6-7.
John Barba chipped in 17 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals; Daileg had 10 points; and Mclaude Guadana and Neil Moralejo added nine points each for Lyceum.
